It's obvious that the movie is a sci-fi. There's a new planet, there's guns, there's space ships etc. However, when the movie shifts to the Na'vi tribe (off-topic: does anyone else get reminded of Link's annoying companion from Ocarina of Time whenever that name is said?) you see just a small glimpse of the fantastic: mysticism, magic and (most importantly) dragons! Granted, a lot of things are explained by the science, but it's good to have just that little hint of fantasy in there, whether the producers were conscious of it or not. If there were to be any kind of spin off material (animations, novels etc.) a focus on the Na'vi would be a great place to start.

I don't think Cameron based the story on old Poch. It was Fern Gully! The fact a worker of the logging company got turned into a shorty and saw things from the imps side, that the fairies rode on bats and forest creatures and that there where two forces of evil at work greed (the logging/mining firm) and hatred (the general or in fern gully the evil spirit tree). Seriously though Cameron just grabbed a thousand great ideas, chucked them into a blender, poured into a XL mug and sprinkled Sugary graphics on top. As you sip your tongue tingles with the new sensation of amazing 3D but as you get further down you realize that nothing else in this mug is new. Saying that nothing new is required to make a good movie, but something is to make a brilliant one. And yes i did get reminded of Zelda, though i remember her fondly, that glowing, bouncing, jinglerly ball. On a side note the mate i went with did something fairly foolish. When the 3D dust was falling he actually tried to move a particle with his hand.
