Some pretty awesome publicity stunts from The Walking Dead and Mass Effect 3

I'm always a fan of unusual approaches to marketing and publicity, and these two publicity stunts are the best I've seen in recent months. The first is prior to the release of Mass Effect 3, where publisher Electronic Arts are dropping copies of the Mass Effect 3 from near space. The games can be tracked via GPS so that everyone knows where and when they fall. Those lucky enough to nab a copy will own the game a week before general release. Mmm, space game.

The second is in line with the release of The Walking Dead Season 2, where a packed-out South African cinema was treated to a fake rom-com trailer with a live zombie in the audience. Check out the video below, it's awesome.

What marketing stunts have you enjoyed?

  1. She shot him! Bet that surprised the audience. And wouldn't those games burst into flames upon entry to the earth's atmosphere? Or are they not dropping them from that high?

    1. That was my thought too, but it's being done via weather balloons so maybe they're controlling the descent.

  2. Won't the games burn up on reentry? And they're lucky no one attacked that zombie for real.

    1. I'm surprised that everyone just sat there after the initial shock. We would all be so dead if the zombie apocalypse really happened.

    1. It's the kind of interactivity that the cinema has lost. I believe they did similar kind of 'live' stunts back in the 50s (or maybe earlier) and I think it works.

  4. That's some publicity stunt! I liked the end of it--it was unexpected.

    1. I like how everyone cheered afterwards. That's what would make cinema ads great; might encourage people to take notice.

    1. They're doing a drop over London for mass effect, if we're lucky a few will blow over to our neck of the woods.

    1. I'd love to see a 28 Days Later style zombie walk for a promo - whatever town they'd go to would be in chaos!

  7. Outstanding. Fortunately that didn't happen in the states. Here in the Detroit area, it wouldn't have been the woman on the screen getting off the shots. He'd have been down long before. As for MASS EFFECT...God, I'm still playing Skyrim!!!

    1. I know how you feel. Skyrim is still dominating my life (it's just to damn good!) At least I know that when the zombie apocalypse hits, Detroit's the place to be.

  8. actually when they were premiering the first season of TEH WALKING DEAD they had zombies walking in the streets of about 30 big cities around the world, my capitol Belgrade included :) It was fun and I still watch the show regularly, although I wouldn't mind eating alive that Shane idiot if I become a zombie.

    1. That sounds pretty insane. It kind of makes me sad that no one reacts to these kinds of things anymore. Still, I'd have loved to have seen it.

    1. I wouldn't mind this happening on the occasions where I have to sit through a real rom-com!

  12. Wow! Now that is the way to promote a show. I surprised no one attacked that zombie or tried to run out. I'm mean sheesh, a zombie! We're all so dead. ;)

  13. I'm afraid I'd have freaked. Most of me would be saying, 'it's a stunt', but a tiny part of me would be saying 'this is it, it's starting' :-)
