Growing older, I don’t see my friends as often anymore. But when we do all meet, we organise a ‘games weekend’, where we power up the N64 and recreate the perfect gaming days from when we were 13 -17 and didn't have a care in the world.
The N64 oozed quality and through Nintendo’s partnership with Rare, one of the finest video game developers in history, some of the best games ever were produced. This article will list some of them.
Best Game Ever: The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time
This love letter to Ocarina of Time by Jamie puts it better than I ever can.
Best Racer: Diddy Kong RacingMario Kart is a gem, and a 16-race Grand Prix with my friends is always on the list of must-do. But Diddy Kong was the true racing game of the N64 – airplanes, hovercrafts, stupidly hard bosses to beat, combined with gorgeous graphics and soundtracks.
Best Shooter: Perfect Dark
The Perfect Dark multiplayer was the first game my friends and I encountered intelligent bots, we’d stay up all night trying to beat 8 Perfect bots but couldn't, as they learned our strategies and kicked our asses. We eventually beat them, but even now we enjoy endless hours playing the various modes and maps or trying to complete the game on co-op perfect agent setting.
However, Goldeneye also contains, without a doubt, the most stressful scene in computer gaming: protecting Natalya and her big, stupid head in the Control room. On 00Agent mode, it is the definition of stress.
Best Wrestling Game: No MercyThis is the only wrestling game where the grappling mechanics felt natural. It was perfect. Other wrestling games haven’t come close.
Best Fighting Game: Super Smash BrosI always have, and still do, found Tekken and Mortal Kombat boring to play. Smash Bros is the superior fighting game of all time and once you've played it other fighting games seem dull. In a frenetic flurry of fighting you are required to take on multiple opponents, coordinate between either throwing items or blocking them and to be aware of hazards within the level. You are constantly focused and nothing draws four friends together like this game.
Sure, Kirby was overpowered in the 64 game. Each new version always has at least one fighter overpowered. Personally, I always choose Captain Falcon. Nothing is more satisfying than a falcon punch or a knee to the head of your opponent.
Best Little Known Game: Body Harvest
Imagine GTA but with aliens. This was effectively this game, just more basic. It had huge maps to explore, massive alien monsters to kill and you got to drive around in vehicles and run over humans. I still can’t get past the Siberia level. A truly epic game.
Every one of these games, although their graphics may seem faded now, will stand the test of time. These games were made by gamers, for gamers. And it was obvious the developers cared about what they were doing.
Conclusion:In short, if I got burgled and someone stole my PS3. I’d be annoyed, but if they took my N64 I’d be heartbroken – they’d have stolen memories of some of the best and fun-filled weekends my friends and I have ever had. Yes, I’m a geek, and I do go out and do normal things. But to me, if you have never experienced any of these games I’ve listed here, I feel sorry for you.
And unlike the PS3 or the Xbox, you know if the N64 fails to load the game properly all you need to do is blow the cartridge. It never fails. The N64 had a soul and it is the best console ever made.
