Spotlight on Nosgoth - an MMO set in the Legacy of Kain universe

You might say that I'm a bit of a Legacy of Kain fanboy.

You'd be right.

Since I first played Soul Reaver on the Dreamcast about 14 years ago, the series has a special place in my fanboy heart. I have a small collection of replica swords from the game, prototype action figures and a leather jacket that (I've been told) were originally given to the development team of their final console game, Defiance.

I've also a tattoo from the series.

So yeah, you might say I'm a fanboy.

The problem is that the last Legacy of Kain video game was released in 2004, so I've spend the better part of a decade without my favourite series (although it's no secret that Skyrim has kept me in good company these past three).

Now, there is a new game in development, and it looks to be a doozy.

Nosgoth is a Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game set in the same universe as the original Legacy of Kain series. The game takes place before the events of Soul Reaver. A war between humans and vampires rages on, and as the player you choose your side and make the enemy bleed.

Unfortunately, the new game doesn't have the involvement of the amazing Amy Hennig, who wrote the original series, but based on the early visuals and the background 'lore' released by Psyonix, it's shaping up to be a winner.

The game is in Closed Alpha, so I'm not going to get a chance to play it for a while (unless anyone reading this has any connections to Psyonix, wink wink). In the meantime, I'll have to whet my appetite by trawling through the Lore section of the Nosgoth website to connect the pieces between this new game and the other titles in the franchise.

Did you play any of the Legacy of Kain series? Which of your favourite games do you wish they'd bring back?

  1. Hopefully it lives up to its reputation.Wish I was into the multiplayer online games. Still prefer to go solo.

    1. Me too; I'm a bit of a lone wolf when it comes to gaming - it'll either be this or Elder Scrolls Online that brings me into the fold :)

  2. I'm a bit disappointed that the great Soul Reaver / Legacy of Kain licence is being made into a team death-match game. Soul Reaver has to rank as one of my favourite video games of all time and although the Darksiders games have a similar game-play and Dark Souls has a similar mood, I've not found anything else that married up game-play, style and story the same.

I'll still sign up for the beta ;)

    1. True, true - but after a decade of silence and cancelled projects, I'll take whatever I can get!

  3. It's not an MMO, it is a team deathmatch style game.

    1. The artwork of the LoK series has always been amazing - I'm glad that they're true to form on that front.

    1. You're missing out, Sarah - it has a very good storyline and the worldbuilding is exceptional.

  6. I have a Raziel action figure Jamie, you're not alone! I think I fell in love with this series when I first saw the opening CGI cutscene for Soul Reaver, I've been a fan ever since. I think this was a bad move to make this an MMO, but at least we get something based in Nosgoth and the artwork does look cool. Hopefully we can see a re-launch of the series on this next-gen system. They brought back Thief, so there's still hope for a new Soul Reaver/Kain game. Side story--- I was in military training and there was this GIANT Marine who was intimidating as hell...He was in charge of teaching all the Sailors about Marine Corps instructions, and if you screwed something up he would make you do push-ups. Well one day I saw that he had a Raziel tattoo on his arm and I approached him and we started shooting the shit about the games, he was cool to me for the rest of the time!

    1. That CG intro coupled with the intro music - epic.

I love that the guy had a raziel tattoo too :)

  7. It is a MMO. Similar games have the notion MMOTPS.

Google GATE MMOTPS or WARCRY MMOTPS. They're essentially the same, even the abilities, weapons and classes up to the animations.
